Man Jailed for Ferguson Attack

Friday, October 19th, 2007

A drunken thug who punched Sir Alex Ferguson in the groin was jailed for 15 months on Thursday.
Homeless Kevin Reynolds, branded by the judge a “significant risk to the public”, spotted the Manchester United manager outside a train station, staggered towards him and delivered a single blow.

His “stunned” victim promptly doubled up in agony and, as he fought for breath, managed to gasp “What the hell are you doing?”.

The 44-year-old beggar - whose criminal record boasts a total of 146 convictions including many for violence, during nearly a quarter of a century of drink-driven offending - promptly insisted: “I’m sorry Fergie, I didn’t realise it was you.”

Nani praised by Ferguson

Luis Nani has surprised Sir Alex Ferguson with the way he settled in England since moving from Sporting Lisbon, what more amazing was he has played in 11 games of Manchester United’s opening 13 fixture, making seven starts.

The Red Devils boss also predicts a bright future ahead for the Portuguese winger. “There’s tremendous potential in the boy”, he said. “We really quite bullish about him.”

Nani was brought in to be used in a way that would allowed Ryan Giggs a regular rests. Luck was surely on Nani side, United early season injury and a relatively seamless setting-in period have led to a more permanent involvement notably the wonder goal he scored against Tottenham that seal a 1-0 victory for United.

Ferguson have also praised Nani as a marvellous crosser of the ball as well as have a pair of quick feet. “He’ll settle in more as he learns the language. He’s keen, and he’s doing all right with his English. There’s great potential there, and he’s only 20 so he’s only going to get better.”

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

After a struggling start to the season, Manchester United have come back to form in the Premier League with a 4-0 win over Wigan at the weekend and they haven’t conceded a goal in the league since the derby day defeat to Man City on August 19.

Patrice Evra

Part of the reason is French full-back Patrice Evra, who has been a fixture in the side this season alongside Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, after displacing Gabriel Heinze from the left-back spot with some impressive performances in last season’s campaign. The defender, who arrived at Old Trafford in May 2006, has spoken exclusively to ESPNsoccernet.fr before leaving England for France and Les Bleus’ forthcoming matches against the Faroe Islands and Lithuania. Talking about Manchester, Arsenal, the French team and the new Evra: the former Monaco defender caught up with Bruno Salla. (more…)

Kuszczak Eyes No.1 Jersey

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

Tomasz Kuszczak Eyes No 1Tomasz Kuszczak will continue goalkeeping duties for United against Wigan Athletic on Saturday in the absence of Edwin van der Sar, and the Polish shot-stopper is relishing a run in the first team.

After replacing the Dutchman, who came off with a toe injury against Birmingham, Kuszczak went on to keep Steve Bruce’s men out before earning a clean sheet against Roma. With van der Sar not expected back until United take on Aston Villa, 25-year-old Tomasz is determined to prove himself.

“I know I am a good goalkeeper, I just need the opportunity to show it,” he said. “I don’t think about how long I have got to do that. Edwin is injured at the moment, so I have the chance to play in big games and I need to do well.

“I want to play more,” he added. “That is why it’s important for me to perform in every single game. I enjoy every game at Old Trafford because the fans are great and when you have a full stadium, it is dream to play there.

“I have been happy with my form and feel I did well in pre-season. I was determined to fight for my place but, unfortunately, I started the season on the bench again. Most importanly, the team is in good shape and we are keeping clean sheets and defending well.”
