Sunday, January 27th, 2008

Ronaldo hit double against TottenhamManchester United weren’t at their best, but a Ronaldo double and a Tevez strike proves to be enough for United to come back from 1-0 to win 3-1.

Ronaldo continued his superb scoring spree over Tottenham Hotspurs. The Portugal wizard set a seasonal best tally of 25 goals already as we just have a few days before the end of January 2008 calendar.

Tottenham, in fact are a better team than the scoreline suggest. However, United proved there are deadly in front of goal. Tottenham only have themselves to blame after squandering a number of chances before United come into gear. (more…)

Ferguson: The defense is better than last season

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Sir Alex Ferguson believe Manchester United are on course to retain their Premier League title. The defenders are defending even better than last season.

Red Devils are on equal points with Arsenal at the top of the tab;e and last weekend’s 2-0 win at Reading means United have won eight out of their last nine league games. Ferguson told MUTV: ‘We had to work really hard and defend as a group.

‘There’s a good understanding of the importance of the defensive part of our game and we’re better than we were last season in that sense.

‘We’re into the run-in now. After new year the games start to drop off very quickly and before you know it you’re down to the last few. We’re trying to stay focused and not get carried away.

‘The players know they’re going to have to work hard to win this title. But we’ve got a good squad and I think we’re improving in certain aspects of our play.’

Scholes poised to make United comeback

Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes could return from a three-month injury absence in the FA Cup next weekend, United’s assistant manager Carlos Queiroz said on Friday.

Scholes has been out of action since undergoing an operation to clear up a knee injury sustained in training at the end of October.

‘We are waiting for clearance and we think next Thursday the medical staff will give clearance for Paul Scholes to be ready to start full training and playing. He can play immediately,’ Queiroz told a news conference.

According to Queiroz, Scholes’ general fitness levels are ‘fantastic’ and he believes the 33-year-old former England international could be back in Alex Ferguson’s squad for their FA Cup fourth-round tie against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Jan. 27.

‘The FA Cup is a possibility. We hope after clearance next Thursday that he can at least be on the bench.’

The return of the influential Scholes, who has scored 138 goals in 550 appearances for United, will provide a further boost for United as they chase a treble of the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.

‘To have Paul Scholes, Louis Saha, Gerard Piquet and Gary Neville coming back at the end of the month is fantastic news for us,’ Queiroz added.

Queiroz said Saha was progressing well after a knee injury and that United would decide later on Friday whether to take Gary Neville on their training trip to Saudi Arabia on Saturday night or leave him to train in Manchester and play again for the reserves in mid-week.

Wes Brown returns from suspension for United’s Premier League game at Reading on Saturday and Owen Hargreaves is also fit again.

It’s Real on Ronaldo again!

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Ronaldo link with Real MadridSpanish giants Real Madrid insists they will never give up trying to sign winger Cristiano Ronaldo. The rumour mill linking the Portuguese superstar with a move to Santiago Bernabeu has been in full swing for the last year.

With some reports last week claimed Real Madrid were willing to splash out a world-record £50 million to land him in the summer. Sir Alex Ferguson has described the constant speculation as nonsense, while chief executive David Gill says the club have no intention of selling their star player.

Ronaldo’s superstar status, advertising value, competition prize money by helping Man Utd advanced  and his young age clearly worth more than £50 million. In-fact, there is no price tag on his head at the moment

But Real’s sporting director Predrag Mijatovic clearly isn’t put off by those statements.

He told The Sun: “Ronaldo is an exceptional footballer and, although we know signing a player like that is very complicated, we will just have to keep working on it.

If one day a chance opens up, then we will be there trying to sign him. He’d grace any team in the world.”

Ronaldo has been in stunning form for United this season, and currently tops the Premier League scoring charts with 16 goals in just 17 starts.

Brown may still stay - Gill

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

Brown yet to sign United last offersManchester United chief executive David Gill ‘thinks’ Wes Brown wants to stay at Old Trafford. The defender’s contract expires at the end of the season and he has rejected all offers of an extension to date.

The Premier League champions are not planning to increase their offer for the England international, who was the subject of a recent bid from Newcastle United.

Gill confirmed the Red Devils’ intention to hang on to the 28-year-old and is optimistic Brown will accept a deal to stay.

“We would clearly want Wes to stay,” said Gill in the Daily Star.

“He’s a local boy who has come through the ranks. I think he wants to stay.

“We’ve made him what we believe is an excellent offer, but we’ve not reached an agreement. So we’ll see how it unfolds.”

Reports claim Newcastle’s offer for Brown was £400,000 and Gill does not expect to receive a sizeable bid during the transfer window.

He added: “It is unlikely that a club would come in and offer something substantial for him when he is out of contract in the summer.”
