Ronaldo & Rooney break Villa heart

New England coach Fabio Capello saw Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney grab late goals for Manchester United to settle an uninspiring FA Cup third-round clash 2-0 at Villa Park.

Capello was able to cast his eye over a combined tally of nine players in the two starting line-ups who were eligible for England selection.

But it was Portuguese star Ronaldo who broke the deadlock with nine minutes remaining, before substitute Rooney wrapped up the game in the dying seconds. It means United have now won 13 successive matches against Villa.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side just about deserved their victory, with Ryan Giggs and Rooney both squandering gilt-edged chances to settle the tie before Ronaldo struck. (more…)

Aston Villa vs Man United - FA Cup 3rd round

Saturday, January 5th, 2008

Sir Alex Ferguson has given an insight into how much Wayne Rooney loves his football - and Manchester United in particular.

The England striker, who could return to the side against Aston Villa in the FA Cup after he was laid low by a virus, has indicated he would be keen to see out his career at Old Trafford.

The former Everton star was forced to skip the narrow victory over Birmingham in midweek but has now returned to training.

United boss Ferguson, who will make a late decision, has nothing but praise for Rooney.

“Wayne is at the right club,” he said. “He has been fantastic since he joined us. His enthusiasm is a breath of fresh air. He is the first player in the training ground every morning.

Tottenham spurs Man United away; Jonny Evans Sunderland

Friday, January 4th, 2008

Boss Sir Alex Ferguson has ruled out making any new signing during January transfer window. A number of players - including Tottenham’s Dimitar Berbatov and Rangers defender Alan Hutton - have been linked with a possible switch to Old Trafford now the transfer window is open.

Berbatov has been slapped a £31m price-tag on his head, virtually rule him out of any move to another Premier League club.

However, Ferguson has quickly ruled out any new faces coming in this transfer window as he is happy with the squad at his disposal.

“It is the old game they play,” noted Ferguson.

“Everyone’s trying to play a game, trying to create speculation about who you are going to buy and of course we would have to be buying someone wouldn’t we.

“It is the name of the game for Manchester United.”

Meanwhile, Ferguson has allowed young defender Jonny Evans to join Sunderland on loan until the end of the season and he believe the Northern Ireland international will benefit from the experience.

“We have let Jonny Evans go on loan to Sunderland and the reason for that is simply that he has not had enough football this first half of the season and the injury he had derailed him certainly,” added Ferguson.

“We think we are well covered in the centre back position, so much so that we can let Jonny go there and get the experience because he is going to be a top player.

“He will come back a better player for us because of the experience of going to Sunderland for the next four months.

“He is 19 years of age and an excellent prospect.”

Wes Brown leaving??

Sir Alex Ferguson had turned down Newcastle United bid for the unsettled defender Wes Brown. Newcastle is believed to have tabled approximately £2million, for the versatile defender.

The 28-year-old England international will be out of contract in the summer and has recently turned down an improved final deal from Old Trafford. Although Ferguson has reject Newcastle’s initial offer, Fergie has not ruled out a deal taking place if Brown is interested.

United offer for Brown is still there, the matter now rests with Wes and his agent. - the ball now is Wes’ hand.

Brown has spent most of the season deputising for the injured Gary Neville at right-back and if United manager Ferguson decides to accept an offer, rather than lose the player for nothing in the summer, he may be left short of defender.

Glazer treatment has been unfair - Fergie

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

Glazer treatment unfairSir Alex Ferguson has branded criticism of the Glazer family by Manchester United supporters as ‘unfair’.

The Glazers’ £790million takeover was greeted with outright hostility by some sections of United’s massive fanbase.

Brothers Joel, Avram and Bryan needed to be smuggled out of Old Trafford under police supervision when they completed their buyout in 2005.

Although the viciousness of the opposition to their involvement has reduced, family members can still be the subject of isolated attacks on their visits to Manchester and rebel club FC United, set up as a direct result of the Glazer takeover, continues to attract huge numbers for their position in the English football pyramid.
