Everton’s teenager Jack Rodwell is believe to be on Sir Alex tracking list. Boss Fergie is set to offer £10million plus out-of-favour Michael Carrick before the window closes later. While Everton are desparate to hold on to the under-21 ace but may find the deal too tempting.

Rodwell, 19, is a central midfielder who can also play at centre half and has been compared to a young Rio Ferdinand. United have been unsure whether to go for the player now or wait till the end of this campaign, by then his value will have rocketed when Rodwell add another season of experience under his belt.

Rodwell has been at Goodison since he was seven and became the club’s youngest player in Europe when he was 16. He made his Premier League debut in March 2008 and scored last season in their 3-1 home win over United.

Wayne Rooney ended his five-month goal drought by scoring a penalty as he set Manchester United on their way to a comfortable Premier League win over West Ham.

Rooney’s 33rd-minute penalty after Jonathan Spector had fouled Ryan Giggs will hardly enter his personal haul of fame.

Second-half efforts from Nani and Dimitar Berbatov, who took his tally to three in four games, sealed victory to keep United in touch with early pace-setters Chelsea.

But for West Ham, the international break only provides further opportunity to worry.

Without a point under Avram Grant’s stewardship and unconvincing in Carling Cup triumph against lowly Oxford at Upton Park on Tuesday, the Hammers are now bottom of the table and facing a fight to preserve their top-flight status.

Fabio Capello’s whistle-stop tour of the north-west had taken him to Blackburn and Blackpool. It probably brought a black mood as well when he discovered Frank Lampard would miss the Euro 2012 double-header against Bulgaria and Switzerland.

Whether that news is going to trigger another attempt to lure Paul Scholes out of international retirement remains to be seen.

Capello is not the only one to admire the 35-year-old who, by this season’s standards, had one of his quieter games, even if his passing remains sublime.

Indeed, Scott Parker, a man many felt was unlucky not to get the World Cup call last summer, possibly just edged their personal midfield duel.

The problem for West Ham was that Parker was one of only two Hammers to impress.

It could not be lost on Capello that Robert Green was the other. The two men will forever be united in ignominy for the debacle in South Africa, triggered as it was by the keeper’s howler against the United States in Rustenburg that cost England their flying start.

Yet there was a reason Capello trusted Green in the first place. And his excellent save to deny Nani proved it, even if Green required the additional help of his crossbar after the United winger had latched onto Dimitar Berbatov’s lay-off and let fly from 20 yards.

It was the best of a number of Nani chances, one of which should have provided United with some half-time daylight.

Darren Fletcher was a similar distance out when he belted a right-footed drive that was destined for the top corner before Green pushed it away.

Capello could only wistfully wonder what might have been. At least he did have the certain knowledge that his top striker no longer has to worry about how long it is since he last scored.

Thirteen matches for club and country had passed since Rooney put United ahead in their Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena on March 30.

That drought has been a popular debating point outside Old Trafford but Rooney kept any anxiety he might have been feeling well hidden as he strode up to take the penalty after Spector had been beaten by Giggs and then made a clumsy attempt to retrieve the situation.

Rooney had the confidence to engage in a bit of kidology with Green before sending his international team-mate the wrong way, the celebrations somewhat subdued to say the least.

Tossing away those points at Fulham will gnaw away at Ferguson for some time.

Any fear of a repeat was dispelled within five minutes of the restart when Nani, one of the chief culprits on that occasion, profited from some excellent approach work from Scholes and Rooney, dumped Danny Gabbidon on his backside, then beat Green with ease.

Given West Ham’s almost complete inability to create anything of their own, it was effectively game over.

Kieron Dyer wasted a decent chance when he fired into the side-netting but on this evidence it looks like being a bleak winter for the Londoners, especially if they fall victim to a late attempt to prise Parker away.

United duly collected a third when Berbatov propelled a perfectly-executed airborne volley beyond Green after Nani had charged into the box and clipped a cross to the far post.

The goal heralded a triple substitution by Ferguson, which included a debut for Chris Smalling and standing ovation for Scholes.

With at least two members of his coaching team and FA technical director Sir Trevor Brooking all present, it was tempting to wonder if Capello was thinking of a kidnap attempt.

Brazilian Anderson damage his cruciate ligament in February and travelled to Portugal for his recovery and he could be in contention for a first-team place sometime next month.

The 22-year-old told the club’s official website: “I’m so happy and excited to be back again after six months without football. I’ve been so happy ever since I got back to Carrington and I just can’t wait to play again.

“I’m feeling good. I’ve been training for two weeks and I’m very happy. I think maybe very soon I’ll come back again and start playing normally with the rest of the team. I have had no problems at all with the injury. I’m just running and training now really hard.”

Anderson may struggle to to force his way back into Red Devils’ midfield after a poor showing that came prior to his injury against West Ham.

Sir Alex Ferguson completed his summer signing with the unexpected arrival of Bebe from Vitoria Guimaraes in a £7 million deal, despite having only joined the Portuguese club on a free transfer from a third-tier side five weeks previously.

Little was known about the 20-year-old but it quickly turns lighting strike fascinating story, having previously spent time on the streets. Ferguson acted quickly to sign Bebe without seeing Bebe in action on a football pitch, instead, he relied on glowing recommendations from his Portuguese coaching staff.

Javier Hernandez, aka Chicharito (“Little Green Pea”), was signed before the World Cup started. Chicharito has quickly climbed up the ranks of Mexican football. As top scorer in the Primera Division de Mexico with 17 goals, he earned a place in the Mexico squad for the 2010 World Cup. Hernandez deal was signed back in April 2010 in the region of £8 million.

Chris Smalling was snapped from Fulham in a shock move in January 2010 that at the same time he was loaned back to Fulham for the remaining of the season. The defender attracted the attention of the league’s elite with his performances and after Arsenal and United both made bids, he opted to join Red Devils. He was signed as a future successor to Rio Ferdinand, Smalling shares many of his qualities – including calmness on the ball, accurate distribution and solid aerial ability. Chris Smalling cost a £7 million transfer fees United paid to Fulham.

Rio Ferdinand is still a month away from returning to action, according to Sir Alex Ferguson. The England captain has spent the last two months recovering from the knee ligament injury which happened in a freak accident with Heskey during training at England camp.

Ferdinand will miss the start of the new Premier League season and making him a major doubt for England’s opening two Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and September 3 and Switzerland four day later.

Rio has had a bad 12 months campaign last season which saw him with succession injuries in back injury, groin injury and the freak knee ligaments injury.

“Although the knee ligaments wasn’t what you’d call a serious one, it was a hard one. You have to take time with knee ligaments”, added Ferguson.

Anderson has moved to ease fears over his well-being by insisting he emerged unscathed from his weekend car crash.

The Manchester United man reportedly had to be pulled out of his car after it thundered into a wall in the early hours of Saturday.

The midfielder, who is recovering from a cruciate knee ligament problem, was taken to hospital for treatment but has claimed he suffered no major injuries.

“I am very lucky because the accident was serious,” Anderson told the Daily Mail. “I knew the road well, but the car lost control at a curve and we crashed against a wall. I remember people coming to help which I am grateful for.

“I just want to tell United fans I am fine and I will continue my rehabilitation so I can help the team. I’ve had lots of calls and have assured my friends not to worry, but it was a big scare for me.”

Oliviera Anderson has been involved in a car crash in Portugal and was pulled from the wreckage moments before it burst into flames, according to reports.

Anderson is said to have spent hours in hospital after the crash, which occurred at around 7am on a rural road in Braga, but sustained only minor injuries.

The 22-year-old spent the night at the Sardinha Biba nightclub before leaving in a £125,000 Audi R8 and a witness said he was pulled ”lifeless” from the wreckage before it went up in flames.

Almeno Antunes, who according to Jornal de Noticias helped rescue the three people in the car, said: “I saw a cloud of smoke ahead of me. The car was unable to straighten up after a slight bend and went into the field and caught fire. I thought he was dead. My brother dragged him out.”

Two companions – a man known as Victor and a young Brazilian woman, whose details have not been released – were also said to have been involved in the accident and were taken to St Mark’s hospital to be treated for concussion, whiplash and shock. “They had only minor injuries,” a hospital spokesman, Roman Fresco, said.

Anderson ruptured his cruciate ligament in February and has been out of action since. The Portuguese press quoted the Gestifute agency, which represents Anderson, as saying the Brazilian would now return to Manchester to continue his rehabilitation after suffering an “almighty scare”.

The sponsorship and charity campaign were launched at Old Trafford this morning by executives of Aon and Manchester United, alongside club legends Sir Bobby Charlton, Bryan Robson and Quinton Fortune.

“Based on our shared values of leadership, teamwork and a passion for excellence, it is difficult to imagine a stronger fit for Aon than Manchester United,” said Aon Corporation president and chief executive Greg Case. “Through the global charitable initiatives of Aon’s 36,000 colleagues, we will work with our partners at Manchester United and the Manchester United Foundation to promote these values and create positive opportunities for young people, to enable them to thrive and to help improve their communities.”

United chief executive officer David Gill said: “This event is an indication of how Aon is committed to developing the partnership way beyond a simple commercial arrangement. In the coming years, I hope we will be able to build a tangible legacy for the Manchester United community both here in the north west and further afield. I am delighted Aon wants to get its whole worldwide workforce involved. I’m sure it will really bring the sponsorship to life for many of them.”

To mark the start of the sponsorship, the first charity event involved more than 150 of Aon’s Manchester-based colleagues and their families. They participated in a penalty shootout challenge at Old Trafford for the Manchester-based The Christie charity, a leading cancer centre that treats more than 40,000 patients a year.

The Aon Foundation donated £25,000, of which £3,500 came from the penalty challenge, to The Survivorship Programme of The Christie, which helps young people progress in their educational and career goals and receive life skills and support following cancer treatment.

The Christie chief executive Caroline Shaw said: “Having cancer at any age is traumatic, but it is especially difficult for young people when they still have their whole lives ahead of them. This generous support will help them have the successful and fulfilling life that they deserve after cancer.”

Case added: “Throughout our offices around the world [more than 500], Aon colleagues are joining today’s fund raising through an ‘Aon United REDy Day’ campaign, which includes raising money for local charities by wearing Manchester United shirts or red clothes for the day. Aon is an organization that is truly committed to strengthening communities by sharing our human, intellectual and financial resources. We believe that through this ongoing program of charitable initiatives we can make a positive difference in people’s lives.”

Forthcoming Aon charity initiatives include Aon United Day on 15 July 2010, which will involve Aon’s global colleagues in over 120 countries participating in fund raising and volunteer activities, including supporting hundreds of schools, children’s hospitals, orphanages and community centers, as well as high-profile organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters Clubs, Junior Achievement, Ronald McDonald House, Special Olympics, UNICEF, United Way and the YMCA.

In Botswana, Aon colleagues will partner with the House of Hope orphanage by providing furniture donations and helping to clean and improve the facility. In Singapore, Aon volunteers will host an indoor football match for the young people served by Boys’ Town and will support the organization’s new building fund. Aon Bangalore has “adopted” a local elementary school that it will support throughout the coming year with both charitable donations and volunteer service. In Bolivia, Aon colleagues will donate to Hogar de Ninos Alalay, helping to plant trees on the orphanage grounds and creating art projects with the children who live there. In Sacramento, California, Aon colleagues are partnering with Project 680 by collecting hygiene supplies to distribute to homeless youth. In the Netherlands, Aon colleagues will participate in a charity bike ride and sell Right to Play merchandise to help raise funds for youth sports program in disadvantaged areas.
