Fergie Hunting Strikers

After three winless start to the Premiership campaign, rumour are running high that Fergie will once again splash his cash for a striker. United attack look toothless after the loss of Rooney through foot injury and the suspension of Ronaldo who will sit for another two matches. New boy Tevez has looked lively in his last two games so far, it is asking a lot of a new player to become the attacking fulcrum when his natural role is not an out-and-out goal poacher in the Ruud van Nistelrooy mould.

Nicolas Anelka of Bolton, Obafemi Martins of Newcastle, Dimitar Berbatov of Spurs, Michael Owen of Newcastle and Klaas Jan Huntelaar of Ajax have all been mentioned. Now we look into the possibility of buying the few names mentioned above.

Nicolas Anelka: Once upon a time the prospect of the hairdryer meeting the enfant terrible would have sold out Old Trafford. But Le Sulk has mellowed a lot since his early days as has Fergie and, all things considered, Anelka is probably the most likely choice. The Frenchman has the class and the scoring knack to be an almost perfect fit – a Louis Saha who doesn’t get injured. And with Bolton falling apart since Big Sam left, he will be hard to keep. Around £12m should seal it.

Obafemi Martins : The latest to be mentioned in view of his £13m get-out clause. Fergie may have to risk his friendship with Big Sam to get him but Newcastle can’t stop him leaving if Fergie decides he’s the one. An entertainer above all, there are doubts about his commitment and temperament but if the goals are going in, then all would be sweetness and light. And what a mouth-watering prospect it would be – an attack of Ronaldo, Rooney, Martins, Tevez and Nani

Dimitar Berbatov: Martin Jol wanted to sell the Bulgarian star after a prima donna act in the first game of the season but the Spurs board wouldn’t hear of it.However, Jol blew the budget in the summer and if they are to give a new manager cash to spend they have to raise it from somewhere. Still, no new boss in their right mind would countenance selling the superstar
and fans favourite. Besides, the Glazers couldn’t afford him anyway.

Michael Owen: Fergie is a long-time admirer but he’s unlikely to take the risk on a player who has a lot to do to prove his fitness. And even then, there are doubts that he can regain his old scoring touch.
What’s more,Owen, feeling guilty that he’s hardly played for the Magpies, has just announced his commitment to the Toon cause. To go back on his word now is not his style even though he’d love a
move closer to his North Wales home.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar: Rumoured to be on his way to every top club in Europe over the summer, the Dutchman opted to stay with Ajax which at least gives Fergie a sniff of a chance. Had he signed for
one of the big boys, he would be out of bounds. But the striker, who is nicknamed ‘the Hunter’, has shown he’s already on the scent this season with four goals in Ajax’s 8-1 thrashing of De Graafschap. Billed as the new van Basten, being the new van Nistelrooy would do – as long as he didn’t come with the baggage.

Ha! I forget to mentioned above, How about Andrei Shevchenko? Well, Leeds sold Cantona to United, didn’t they?
