Ronaldo Sunk Kiev :: Dynamo Kiev 2-4 Man Utd
October 25th, 2007 at 1:11 am , filed under Champions League.
Ronaldo and Rooney form are getting better from matches to matches. This time around it was Ronaldo who scored a double as United struck four times for the third game running, virtually sea a place in the Champions League group stage.
Rio Ferdinand also scored for the second time running, his best ever scoring streak for United since his’ days at United. Rooney, in particular also need to be praised for his seventh goal in six games for club and country, gave United a flying start before Cristiano Ronaldo’s double wrapped up a victory for more comfortable than the scoreline suggests.
Dynamo Kiev’s defending was virtually not existence, it’s hard to see anything other than a United win given the form of United’s attack. The only complaint from the Red Devils chief on a night which saw United complete their biggest European away win in nine years, must have been that his side conceded twice as Diogo Rincon and Ismael Bangouro found the net for Dynamo Kiev to keep things interesting.
With Paul Scholes out to a knee injury sustained in training and Patrice Evra pulled out after a calf strain suffered in the warm-up, the built-up was hardly smooth for the Red Devils. The loss of Scholes in particular will be a concern to Ferguson given Hargreaves and Carrick already sidelined and table toppers clash with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on November 3.
Rio Ferdinand opened the scoreline in the 10th minute, thunder in a towering header from Giggs free-kick on the side of the penalty box after Ronaldo was brought down by Kiev’s defender. This is Ferdinand first European goal in 42 attempts for United.
Soon, Ferdinand’s England team-mate Wayne Rooney found his birthday gift as he had the simplest chance of the night by tapping in Wes Brown’s low cross to maintain his impressive run of form. Ronaldo was the architect of that effort, breaking from inside of his half to run at Kiev’s defender before a defense splitting pass to Wes Brown who provide the low cross to Rooney waiting to tap in his present.
Diogo Rincon headed in the corner-kick in the 33rd minute after Portugal winger Ronaldo should have been protecting the post. Rincon header crept into to hand Dynamo a lifeline, however, Ronaldo was making up for his own error when he nodded home United’s third in the 41st minute.
He could probably have controlled Ryan Giggs’s cross and rolled it in with his head such was the non-existent nature of Dynamo’s defense. If Dynamo’s defense are to be in this non-existent nature in the return game at Old Trafford in a fortnight, rest assured a favourable would see Sir Alex’s men book a place in the knock-out phase with two games to spare.
Even with two half-time changes, Dynamo were unconvincing and Anderson was agonisingly close to netting his first United goal with a shot which bounced back off a post with Olexandr Shovkovskiy beaten.
Had Dynamo been awarded what appeared a certain penalty when substitute Artem Milevskiy tumbled under Nemanja Vidic’s challenge, the hosts might have made a game of it. Instead, Hungarian referee Viktor Kassai ruled in United’s favour - dubiously it seemed on TV replays - and then gave the Red Devils a spot-kick, after extensive consultation with his assistant, after Goran Gavrancic had stuck out an elbow to block Tevez’s cross.
Rooney, who failed miserably with his hat-trick attempt at Villa Park on Saturday, handed over responsibility to Ronaldo, who promptly sent Shovkovskiy the wrong way. Bangoura wrapped up the scoring 10 minutes from time and while the departure of a seemingly uninjured Edwin van der Sar raised eyebrows not long afterwards, United coasted home.
