Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed the flourishing strike partnership between Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez as the bedrock of the Premier League champions current rich vein of form. A possible goal of the season from Nani, a Rooney strike and a second-half double from Tevez earned United a 4-1 win at Old Trafford on Saturday and Ferguson has rarely been more fulsome in his praise for a United team.

“They’re fantastic,” the Scot said of his front pair. “As they get maturity and develop as experienced players, hopefully we will see a complete partnership. “But even now it’s fantastic and they are still young. Some of our attacking play at times was very good. We took our foot off the pedal in the first half but their goal was a wake-up call.

“There was no doubt about the result in the second half, our attacking play improved far more and so did our concentration. “Our third goal summed up the partnership between Rooney and Tevez. It took quick thinking, great vision and courage to do it because Wayne could have taken an extra touch. And Nani’s was a thunderbolt hit, a fantastic goal, and he’s coming along nicely as well.

“For weeks we’ve been talking about one-nils, now it’s fours!”

Rooney himself is in a phenomenal vein of form, October having seen him score six goals in five games and mastermind his team?s upturn in fortunes. Not surprisingly, given the level of United?s play currently, the England centre-forward is relishing the prospect of next weekend?s visit to the Emirates Stadium to play Arsenal.

“It’s brilliant to play in this team, a real honour,” said Rooney. “The way we play every week, fast and attacking, that’s the football I want to be involved in. “Hopefully, I can continue in this form. I try to score in every game and it is brilliant playing with Carlos, he is a clever player, very intelligent. I think we both work off each other and are scoring goals together. It?s good.

“It’s a big week for Arsenal now. They’ve got Liverpool away tomorrow and us at home next week. Hopefully, we’ll see a draw tomorrow and we can beat them next week. That would be good for us.”
